Parker about « and just like that »: Carrie is driven by curiosity

The big city single Carrie Bradshaw sits with her laptop in a sparkling courtyard on a New York street where the apartments cost three-digit million. A well-known situation for all fans of the TV series « Sex and the City », which was broadcast during a time when words like big city single were used to describe a certain type of trendy and urban young man.

The sequel « And Just Like That … » will soon premiere for its third season and it is in one of the first episodes that the lead role sits in the garden and writes on its first novel. Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, quickly gained status as a style icon during « Sex and the City’s » first seasons, which « and just like that … » sticks to almost 30 years later. In typical Carrie style, she writes script in the courtyard introduced party bladder, beads and soaring silk shoes with pink bows.

The peace in the garden will not be long lasting. Carrie Bradshaw has to escape neck above head and with the risk of stumbling on the heels when a rustling in the bush turns out to be a bunch of angry rats.

Although « and just like that … …«  received criticism for not reaching the same heights as « Sex and the City », the new season finds back to the comic side of the story that contributed to the original series’s charm.

– Brand new target groups have found « Sex and the City » since the series also began to appear on Netflix, says Sarah Jessica Parker on interview link from New York.

She is somewhat delayed because of the hectic morning traffic but is now ready to answer questions wearing peach -colored jacket and double rows of necklace.

-If I had been asked three years ago, I could have told exactly who « and just like that … »-the viewer is: Often someone who grew up with « Sex and the City » and followed the characters’ lives. Now younger generations are as engaged as the elderly were then. In addition, I am increasingly stopped by straight men who discovered the series and want to talk about the relationships in it. The gay audience has been there since the beginning, and has been incredibly valuable, continues Sarah Jessica Parker, who recently turned 60.

You have been playing Carrie Bradshaw on and off for 27 years now. Do you relate to the role in the same way now as in the beginning?

– I’m always worried about not being good enough. I wish I matured more and that all years of experience made me more relaxed for the job but it is not. I care so much about succeeding in managing the screenwriters and in this case the creator of the series Michael Patrick King’s vision.

How has Carrie changed?

– The stories and the action are constantly renewed but she is the same. Then both she and I have to relate to change and new things that happen.

The freelance vogue writer Carrie Bradshaw’s scarce on the keyboard has been a constant framing of the sections since the start of the story of the girl gang in New York, although most have changed since then. Not least storytelling.

The series has gone from being packed with sex scenes and that Carrie Bradshaw broke the fourth wall by commenting on the event development directly to the audience, via two film flops (2008 and 2010) to, in the new season of « and just like that … » developed into more of a drama comedy.

It’s easy to forget how big the « sex and the city » was when it came. The series broke new ground, not least for female viewers who could both recognize themselves and envy the lifestyle of the complicated quartet. The series’ fashion, drinks, recording sites and action were dissected every week and in New York, guided bus trips were arranged in the footsteps of the series.

– Of course, there were female protagonists before us but the way we told these women’s story was new. It was because the series was broadcast on HBO that was a groundbreaking broadcasting company and a precursor in many ways. The language we could use and the topics we raised, it simply had not been done in the same way before, she says and continues:

– Now the range of television and streaming looks completely different and is dominated by women, which I find exciting. It is not as big a thing that a series is about how women take longer.

« Sex and the City » ended As you know, Carrie finally got her great love, Mr Big, but when « and just like that … » took on, finally P for that relationship was set. For some fans horror and other people’s delight, her ex-boyfriend Aidan Shaw reappeared (played by John Corbett), and he has held on to the new season as well.

Love Strubble is the foundation in the story of Carrie Bradshaw and her friends, although family life in all forms has taken more space as the characters aged. Aidan’s entry means that Carrie is once again worried about unanswered SMS, sending out the wrong signals, relationships and other classic « sex and the city » themes.

– Carrie is driven by curiosity, both in work and in private. I think she is genuinely interested in human relationships and what makes them work, and not. But, basically … she always looks for the feeling of coming home – what it means.
