Parisians in a referendum support the creation of free zones / day free zones
Most of the local referendum participants supported a plan to ban cars in large areas of Paris, and thus 500 streets in the French capital will become pedestrian streets.
As a result of the changes, approximately 10,000 car parks will be eliminated in the coming years.
However, only 4% of almost 1.4 million registered voters participated in the referendum. The mayor of Paris Anna Idalgo informed that 66% of the referendum participants supported the plan.
The municipality will hold consultations in the coming weeks to determine which streets will be transformed into pedestrian streets. The plan stipulates that about 25 streets will be transformed into pedestrian streets in each of the administrative areas of Paris.
In total, Paris has more than 6,000 streets, of which about 220 are already prohibited by car traffic. In some places, cars are prohibited in individual street sections, such as schools.
It was the third referendum in Paris related to transport issues. In April 2023, the referendum supported the ban on electric scooters. In February 2024, a higher parking cost for off -road vehicles was set.
