A 35-year-old German and a 38-year-old Croatian citizen were arrested in Vienna on Wednesday evening after being suspected of having abused their nine-week child together so badly that there was a risk of life. At 8:30 p.m., the arrest took place in the hospital in which the parents had brought her daughter because of a seizure.
As the State Police Directorate announced on Thursday, there was suspicion of the possible abuse after extensive medical examinations of the infant. The treating doctors found numerous serious injuries that the girl had to operate. As police spokesman Markus Dittrich said, the child’s multiple injuries could come from a shaking trauma. This form of violence can cause fatal brain injuries or lifelong consequential damage.
The hospital immediately filed a complaint. The arrested parents initially refused to testify and were admitted to a judiciary at the order of the Vienna public prosecutor’s office. According to reports, another police questioning of the suspects was planned on Thursday. Further surveys are underway, the child and youth welfare (MA 11) was informed about the facts and initially took care of the care through the infant.
