Palle: When you scratch on the surface, the color arrives.

On assignment. Run lost in the villa suburb. Asks a razing man after the road. « Larssons? They live a little bit away in the turn. In the yellow house. »

Away in the turn, however, is no yellow house and I go out of the car. I am met by a man who turns out to be exactly the one I am looking for. He laughs when I wonder about the neighbor’s description of the color of the house.

– Did he say yellow? That is true, or rather, our house was yellow but it was a long time since we painted it green.

Memory is a strange thing which sometimes seems to have the ability to distort reality. At work, some still say « we see in the red sofas » – that is, the sofa group in the entrance. But a lot of editions have been printed since they were reduced to the color that they now boast. Blue.

Color blindness. The most common form means that it is difficult to distinguish between red and green and in practice it means that you cannot work as a train driver, air traffic controller, pilot, or police. However, politicians are doing well, although for some it seems difficult to distinguish the color brown from others. Especially in election times.

It was a magical day. I was going to Hédi Fried and brought my teenage prao student with me. I would take a portrait of her on behalf of the newspaper. We met in the door by Hédi who tightened our eyes in praon.

« Have you read my book? » « Eh, no. » « Do you want a copy? » « Jatack. »

Then they sat there and talked While the coffee cold. Hédi signed the book and told about his life. About Auschwitz and a horror that no adjectives can describe. About the meeting with Dr. Josef Mengele who shared the family on the arrival of the family – right for her mother who was killed, left for Hédi and her sister Livia who survived and at the end of the war was taken to Sweden by the Red Cross.

Afterwards we sat in the car for a long time talking, me and my prao student. He was completely taken, like me.

I asked if he understood what he had just been through. « How many people can tell their future children and grandchildren that they have got the desire to meet someone such a unique person as Hédi Fried? »

Hédi told me that she still heard the voices of those who thinned away in the camp and that she tried to inform the people’s people what happened then, to prevent it from happening again. Hédi Fried suffered from the suites from the past, but if it was something she was not suffering from then it was color blindness.
