At an auction of Christie’s in Paris, a painting by Rik Wouters went under the hammer for 2.46 million euros. It is the highest amount that has already been paid for a work by the Belgian artist, which is counted among Brabant Fauvism.

‘Reflets’ (‘Reflections’), a portrait of his wife and Muze Nel from 1912, was estimated between 650,000 and 850,000 euros. The painting is part of a collection that has been collected since the 70s of the last century by Joris Onsa and Suzanne Govaerts and was compiled by designer, antiquarian and art dealer Axel Vervoordt.

The collection spans various traditions and eras. She raised a total of 10 million euros. The works on paper and on canvas from Wouters were sold for a total amount of 4.2 million euros.

The Brabant Fauvism is a collective name for a group of Belgian artists from the Brussels Rand at the beginning of the twentieth century, conceived by the Brussels gallery owner Georges Giroux. They didn’t have much to do with the French fauvists, such as Henri Matisse, but also focus on bright color contrasts and coarse brush strokes. Wouters – painter, draftsman and sculptor – is seen as a pivotal figure of Brabant Fauvism. He died in 1916 at the age of 33 in Amsterdam.
