The conflict between the owner of the house and birds must be prevented as early as possible and not allow the birds to build a nest in an inappropriate place. Early spring is the best time to inspect the building and, if necessary, prevent the access of birds to it, the Department of Environment reports.

Crows and seagulls, which cause the most anxiety, are already looking for places for nesting, so now is the time to inspect the buildings. “Breathing birds during nesting is unethical and prohibited by law. Growing chicks is the most important and sensitive period for birds. Therefore, the building should be examined before the start of the bird's nesting season. However, prevention should not begin in the middle of the nesting period – if the nest already has eggs and/or chicks, you should stay away from them and wait until the chicks become large enough to leave the nest, ”said the head of the environmental work of the Department of Environment, Ayke Tammekyand.

Already in March, the roofs should be inspected and to prevent nesting attempts. This will give birds the opportunity to choose a more suitable place for the nest and grow offspring. The owner of the house must examine and, if necessary, prevent the access of birds on the roof, attic, balconies, cornices, as well as critically examine the entire building or warehouse under construction. A particularly thorough inspection is needed if in spring or summer it is planned to repair the roof or insulation of the building.

People should not interfere in the natural life cycle of nature, and birds are a natural part of the urban environment. The intervention is justified only to protect the health or property of a person. “The law allows you to remove bird nests only in order to ensure the safety or protect property, but even in these cases it is necessary to obtain permission from the Department of Environment. However, permission to move or remove the nest is an exception, ”Tamkekyand explained, adding that it is best if the birds do not nest in an inappropriate place and will be able to find a more suitable place in the early stage.

Practical recommendations:

  • Close a net or repair possible openings and holes in roofing overhangs and other places available for birds.
  • Clean the roofs of garbage and other materials suitable for the construction of nests. Take out extra objects from gentle roofs and balconies.
  • If necessary, use suitable repulsion agents, such as images of birds of prey, fluttering on a pole of air snakes, balls in the form of eyes. Change the repulsive funds from time to time as birds get used to them.
  • A gentle roof must be cleaned in advance of branches, which are a suitable material for nesting of the gulls. The roof must be visited daily and remove possible nests, while giving the birds a signal that this is an inappropriate place for nesting.
  • Crows, jackdaws and seagulls nesting next to people due to easily accessible food. It is definitely not worth feeding them. Garbage containers should be kept closed, and compost must be assembled in a closed composter.
  • If the nesting of birds does not bother you, let them do it calmly. Birds live in settlements, because there are suitable nesting, food and shelter suitable for them.
