Over the last 30 years, skin cancer has increased almost twice.
More often the ailment affects men, according to a study, Posted In Jama Dermatology.
Studies were conducted by Chinese scientists from the first affiliate hospital of Choundsin Medical University, reports Medicalxpress.
They analyzed the global burden of diseases for 2021 (this is a global program that evaluates mortality from major diseases, injuries and risk factors) for three major skin cancer: melanoma, basal cell and squamous cell.Ritinoma. The study covered 204 countries.
In total, in 2021, 153,000 cases of melanoma, 1.4 million cases of squamous cell carcinoma and 2 million cases of basal cell carcinoma were registered in the world.
Scientists have studied that the incidence of melanoma and its prevalence in all age subgroups increased steadily from 1990 to 2021, especially among the elderly (from 85 years).
The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma has increased by about 2% annually from 1990 to 2021. Thus, for 35 years, the incidence rate has doubled.
According to the researchers, there are two main factors that caused the incidence.
”The main reason for 30 years of growth was not only the « aging of the population », but also the total increase in population« , – the scientists are convinced.
The study also found that this type of cancer affects men, not women, much more often.
”The higher incidence of melanoma in men may be associated with less use of sunscreen and more frequent stay on the open air than women.
Studies have shown that men have lower awareness of skin cancer, so they often do not pass screening in the early stages« , – the researchers believe.
