'' Our health is at stake ''
Doctors protest. Thousands of people manifested in the center of Budapest on Saturday to demand more funds for the Hungarian public health system, neglected for a long time. They have displayed banners with messages such as « European medical care norms » and « is at stake our health, » AFP reports.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has been in power since 2010, is increasingly criticized for the poor quality of public services, with the proximity of the parliamentary elections provided for 2026.
The demonstration, organized by the Hungarian Hungarian Chamber (Mok), took place before the Hungarian Parliament.
Gergely Gulyas, the head of Prime Minister Orban, gave assurances that he was open to negotiations and said that in recent years there have been « high progress » in the field of health, especially by increasing the salaries of doctors.
According to Eurostat, Hungary allocated only 4.4 % of its GDP in 2022, the lowest proportion of all Member States of the European Union.
Present at the demonstration, the leader of the Hungarian opposition Peter Magyar denounced in August last year the situation of the Hungarian health system, taking a tour of hospitals for several weeks.
