Orthodox celebrate Easter, Archbishop’s message Joan

Christian believers across the country have today begun the Easter celebration, the greatest and most sacred celebration of the Christian calendar, which symbolizes the resurrection of Christ and the triumph of life over death.

At the Orthodox Cathedral « The Resurrection of Christ » in Tirana, the Passover Mass was led by the new Archbishop of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, His Beatitude, Joan. In his speech to the believers, Archbishop Joan conveyed powerful spiritual messages and commemorated his predecessor, Archbishop Anastasios.

« This Easter does not have physically with us our archbishop Anastasios, but our hearts are comforted by the conviction that He intercems for us to God. Because God is not God of the dead, but of the living. Death is not the end, but the beginning of a new life with God, » he said.

Referring to the challenges of the time, the Archbishop emphasized that only through belief in the resurrection can people live in peace and solidarity with one another:

« We are aware of the difficulties of life: injustices, wars, poverty, illness and death that often lead man to despair. But Christ is and remains our hope. »

After the Mass, the Orthodox believers took the sacred flame to take them to their homes, a tradition that symbolizes spiritual enlightenment and the belief of life.

The festive ceremony was also held at the Catholic Cathedral « St. Paul » in Tirana, where the Passover Mass was led by the Archbishop of Tirana-Durres, Bishop Arjan Dodaj. In his message, he emphasized the importance of peace and prayer for protection at a time of uncertainty and conflict.

« Christ raises what has fallen down and protects those in war. He is our protection and hope, » said Monsignor Dodaj.

This year, Easter coincides at the same date for all Christian, Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant believers, a rare case that has further strengthened the sense of unity, reflection and spiritual community.

Religious ceremonies have begun on Saturday evening with the Mass of Vigilje, and will continue on Sunday with family lunches and festive congratulations across the country.
