Opposition of pilots’ reaction and the engine lost 8,000 feet
Pilots in the Turkish Airlines plane, which was traveling north across Langjökull in February 2023, unknowingly succeeded in control of the aircraft. Their opposite reaction caused the control of the engine and the aircraft lost 8,000 feet in about one minute and seven people were injured.
This is among those stated in the report of the Transport Accident Investigation Board on the incident. The report states that the aircraft has been in serious turmoil due to a high-air mountain wave, but it is criticized that the Icelandic Meteorological Office has not issued a so-called Sigmet warning for this.
One pulled while the other pushed forward
When examining satellite images and other weather data, it was found that the high -air mountain waves had been present over Iceland for many hours before the aircraft landed in the incident.
The first such warning about high -air mountain waves over Iceland this day was issued four minutes after the incident, but not in the area of the incident. About 40 minutes later, the Icelandic Meteorological Office issued another warning in which the mountain wave area was enlarged and strong such mountain waves in the area.
The report states that after the aircraft landed in the turmoil, there was some rapid, but clear, steering intervention along with major changes in the knock, while flying in the turmoil. A violence warning with the vibration of the steering wheel was activated for four times, but the pilots had trouble controlling the machine.
As before, they were unknowingly in control of the aircraft, as the assistant pilot pushed his handlebar while the commander pulled the steering wheel.
The aircraft’s flight schedule is seen on the green line, but the purple line shows the route the machine went.

Fall speed reached 17,100 feet per minute
« The opposite intervention of the assistant pilot and the commander caused their control to be disconnected. Report of the Investigation Committee.
Is the cause of the incident to lack the state consciousness and the collaboration of the pilots.
The Investigative Committee recommends to the Icelandic Meteorological Office to improve automatic climate analysis such as turmoil and mountain waves with high -resolution weather forecasts. It is therefore directed to the Icelandic Meteorological Office to present sigmet warnings graphically on a map.
The committee therefore also directs the Turkish airline to review so-called CRM training for pilots to be better aware of the role of each in flight.
