Open the call for young people to travel the routes of exile after the beginning of the Civil War | Spain

The Ministry of Youth and Childhood opened this Friday the call for The fifth edition of the Route into exile. This initiative will allow 40 young people of 16 and 17 years to visit this summer the key places of republican exile after the coup d’etat of 1936 on a tour that covers the places of memory in Navarra, Catalonia and southeast of France. The Secretary of State for Youth and Childhood, Rubén Pérez, has assured that the exile route « turns silenced history into political awareness for the present. »

The exile route was born with a pedagogical will and has been driven and financed by the Youth Institute (INJUVE). The director of this institution has stated that the route « claims non -formal education to educate in democratic values, so that youth is empowered in the knowledge of our history and that allows us to build a democratic and fair future. »

The Pedagogy Coordinator of the Route, Anna Pastor, has indicated that the project intends « that the youth of our territory knows the republican exile as a complex diaspora process framed in a war. » For its part, Pérez has defined exile as « a form of resistance. » « That today they are young who walk through that memory is a promise: there will be no forgetfulness while there are those who remember and fight, » he added. More than half a million Spaniards crossed the Pyrenees since the war began in 1936.

On this occasion, the project will explore “how music, poetry and oral testimonies are registered in the collective imaginary and define who we are,” according to the press release that presents a call. The project aims to « bring the ear to the earth and recognize the sound of memory. » It also advances that, in March 2026, a new route to exile begins that follows in the footsteps of Disbandthe bombardment of civilians and militiamen fleeing from Malaga to Almería between February 6 and 8, 1937 by the rebel side and charged between 3,000 and 5,000 lives.

The call to participate will be open until April 27 at 23.59 hours. In the last half of May the list of selected people will be published. In order to participate, we must reside in Spain and be 16 or 17 years old at the time of the route, so people born between July 27, 2007 and July 15, 2009 (both included) can participate. Young people must fill in the participation form, in which they attach a presentation video and a creative project proposal. This year the theme revolves around the voices of memory: creation, story and folklore.
