One in seven schools does not get enough from Education Inspectorate

One in the seven-examined schools received an unfavorable advice from the Flemish Education Inspectorate in the 2023-2024 school year. Those are significantly more schools than the school year before, the newspaper writes Time. To gain a better view of the operation of schools, the Education Inspectorate will no longer announce checks.

To control the quality of our education, the Flemish government sent inspectors to 622 schools last school year, ranging from (special) primary education about (special) secondary education to part -time art education, adult education and CLBs.

Just over half (54 percent) of the examined institutions received favorable advice. Three in ten schools (31 percent) received favorable advice, but with the obligation to eliminate shortages themselves. On the other hand, one in seven schools (14 percent) received unfavorable advice, knows Time. They must be guided externally or lose their recognition. In the 2022-2023 school year, ‘only’ 9 percent of the screened schools received an unfavorable advice. Then no recognition was withdrawn from any school, compared to four institutions last school year.

« This shows that in many schools, academies and centers there is still a lot of work to be done. All together, almost half of the institutions have to commit themselves to eliminate the established deficits, » says the Education Inspectorate in its annual report.

At the end of April, the Flemish Government already decided that from now on the Education Inspectorate can also screen unannounced educational institutions. Until now, the inspections have been announced three weeks in advance. From now on the Education Inspectorate will also review more schools.
