However, the state prefers money to new roads and highways than to maintain and repair old bridges. The kicked problems are therefore increasingly manifesting. For example, last year they had to demolish the bridge above the expressway near Banská Bystrica instead of repair.

They get less than they need

The State Slovak Road Administration (SSC) is in charge of nearly 1800 bridges on first -class roads. In addition, they completed the reconstruction of bridges for 40 million euros (during the reconstruction the bridge will be demolished and built again).

As the SSC spokeswoman Jana Lukáčová says, this year they have EUR 6.1 million approved for the repair and maintenance of bridges and about EUR 30 million is earmarked for reconstruction.

Most of the money, nearly eight million euros, will go to the reconstruction of the bridge over the Sered Railway this year. In addition, the travelers are going to repair another ten bridges all over Slovakia.

The main criterion for the repair of the bridge is its technical condition and road safety on it.

Essentially, the SSC funds are enough to extinguish the biggest problems. According to the spokeswoman, they would need one hundred million euros per year to maintain, repair and reconstruct the bridges.

I analysts of the Value Department (ÚHP) at the Ministry of Finance they saythat the state must accelerate the repair of bridges.

For example, if the state repaired 20 bridges a year, the number of those in the state of emergency would increase up to ten times in 20 years. According to their estimates, however, 110 bridges could be repaired every year for EUR 85 million per year.

Study for 7.6 million

The Ministry of Transport for the reconstruction of bridges is preparing the form of so-called public-private partnerships (PPP). The model in which construction work is paid by private investors (concessionaires), which is then gradually repaid by the state for decades on motorways.

The Ministry already in competition selected a feasibility supplier. For 7.6 million euros it will be drawn up by a consortium led by Wood & Company.

The study is to be analyzed by bridges in the four worst categories of construction-technical state (satisfactory, bad, very bad and emergency), which is more than 1100 in Slovakia.

By the end of this year, advisors should determine the criteria according to which the repair bridges will be selected and then create a list.

« According to the outputs of the feasibility study together with the winning candidate, we will process the competition documents and documentation for the selection of the concessionaire, » adds the ministry.

ÚHP analysts in the past pointed out The fact that PPP does not always have to be a convenient model for repairing bridges.
