Almar Guðmundsson, mayor of Gardabaer, is optimistic that the municipality will have a good education plan in the coming months.

The municipal authorities are working to gather information on the assessment of elementary school children in the town to get a complete overview of the state of education.

The project began last year following extensive discussion of mbl.is and Morgunblaðið on the problems of the Icelandic school system and the poor performance of children in international comparisons.

Almar discusses opportunities and challenges in school affairs in daily affairs together with Ásdís Kristjánsdóttir, mayor of Kopavogur.

Information fixed in systems

Almar says information on the assessment of each student is available, but another value on information on the performance of classes and cohorts.

« Isn't it strange that I have to address it as a special task that we are going to approach the children's assessment? Of course, this should just be available. «

“Our project is to get this information. Of course, they are available, but they are unfortunately a little tight in information systems and more. This is also a classic modern project. Not to accept that the data is just somewhere, but have it accessible and utilized, ”says Almar.

Start by watching town as a whole

« We hope in this project that we will be able to draw a comprehensive position across the town. We start there – watching the town as a whole. In the first race, we are not as preoccupied with watching school A Versus school B. We are not eating them together. We just want them to have good data and know where they stand, ”says Almar and continues:

« We see them that in the spring we will have a good action plan. For example, we are ready to say that it is missing a standard scale.  »

He says it is appropriate to wait for the Center for Education and School Services to complete work on the assessment process, which will be the new coordinated assessment.

The assessment curve was supposed to be ready in 2022 but is still in progress. The Minister of Education expects to provide mathematics and Icelandic assessment career in the next school year.

The children deserve it

« But it may well be that on our behalf to have conversations with Kopavogur town and more powerful municipalities and ask if we can go on the project together to bridge the gap because we do not think it is natural to wait for the Institute of Education in this case regarding these resources. »

He says such issues are often complicated in the administration. Despite a good intention to finish them early, this can take time.

« I just think our children understand that we are quick to work on this. I will be ready to do something when we know what the situation is. «
