OCL-GALA: There are also some tears between tones

With a festive concert in the large hall of the Philharmonie The Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg (OCL) celebrated its 50th anniversary on Thursday evening. The evening was all about musical diversity, cultural engagement – and a noticeable spirit of optimism within the ensemble.

In the presence of représentant-lieutenant Erbgröszog Guillaume, the patron of the anniversary year, as well as Minister of Culture Eric Thill, the OCL, under the direction of guest conductor Carlo Rizzari Composer Catherine Kontz. The latter was commissioned with the support of the Ministry of Culture for this occasion – a clear sign for the connection between tradition and contemporary musical signature.

Again and again it was reminded in the speeches of the orchestra’s roots, in particular the founding initiative of Anne and Françoise Groben and Dominique Poppe, which launched the ensemble « Les Musiciens » five decades ago, from which the OCL later emerged. The early death of the two rough sisters, Anne (violin) and Françoise (cello) gave the review a noticeable emotional depth.

A “Happy Birthday” played by the orchestra itself

A video with musical accompaniment by the orchestra – to match the song « What a Wonderful World » – reviewed the eventful history of the ensemble. At the end of the evening, a “Happy Birthday” was played by the orchestra itself, accompanied by the warm applause of the audience.

The focus was also on their own musicians: the concertmaster Pascal Monlong and Lyonel Schmit as well as the boy Cellist Matis Grisó, carrier of the Prix Anne et Françoise rough 2024, convinced with a soloist expression and technical brilliance.

The anniversary concert not only marked a highlight in the current festival year, but also a symbolic fresh start. Because while the orchestra reflects its past, the view is clearly looking forward with a new generation of talents and looking for a new musical direction.
