The number of TV connections continues to decrease. This is evident on Friday from the annual report of the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT). In 2024, 156,508 classic TV connections were canceled

Although the number of TV connections from customers that only grew on the internet television (+ 13.704), that could not compensate for the fall in traditional TV connections. The BIPT itself indicates that that decrease accelerates. In 2024, the net number of TV connections fell by 142,804 (number of new – number disappeared). That is more than in 2023 (128,625) and more than double of 2022 (61,377).
The BIPT is the federal regulator that is competent for the electronic communication market, but also for the postal market, the electromagnetic radio frequency spectrum, and the audiovisual media services and video platform services in the Brussels -Capital Region.
In 2024, the turnover of the package segment, just like previous years, continued to rise. The volumes of the letter posts had the second largest decrease since 2011 (-10.2 percent). Postal company Bpost largely retains its dominant position in the letter post market and is a leader on the package and express market.
Last year the number of SIM cards (+ 1.6 percent) stagnated, the number of SMS messages sent decreased by 14.9 percent and call traffic increased slightly (+ 4.7 percent). More and more datasim cards are using 5G connectivity: at the end of 2024, 40 percent of the active datasim cards 5G traffic generated.
Finally, BIPT also notes that the fiber optic rollout in Belgium is accelerating, and will catch up with other European countries in the coming years.
