Number of minor suspects in ten years fell sharply

The number of minor suspects of crimes in the Netherlands has fallen sharply in recent years. The decrease runs the same as the total number of suspects, of all ages and backgrounds, which has decreased in ten years. In 2024 there were a total of 141 thousand criminal suspects, 43 percent less than ten years before. This is apparent from Friday published Figures from Statistics Netherlands.

The percentage of minors of that whole was 11 percent both last year and ten years ago. But absolutely, that is a lot less criminal young people than the news heads sometimes suggest. From the entire group of suspects, one in six does not officially live in the Netherlands. This is precisely an increase compared to ten years ago. Most non-Dutch suspects in 2024 had a Polish (more than 5 percent) or Romanian (more than 2 percent) background. Suspects who do have a home address in the Netherlands are most often from Amsterdam. In that city, 110 suspects were per ten thousand inhabitants last year. Relatively, most suspects lived in Heerlen 149 per ten thousand inhabitants.
