The rules for the experiment were clear: Ball had to lie down for exactly eight hours at night, but the rest of the time he had to stay upright. That meant he had to squat across the toilet when he was in the bathroom, and in the car he made sure his buttocks did not touch the seat.

« Long-term sedentary work and lack of physical activity are associated with overweight and a number of related disorders, » said 34-year-old Ball as he began his project.

« Sitting for such long periods can lead to back pain, spinal problems, breakdown of joints, poor posture in the upper back, neck and shoulders as well as circulatory problems in the legs. »

Although he appreciated that he could carry out the challenge alone and without expensive equipment, he bought a raising-lowering table to facilitate the transition.

It turned out to be a good investment when Ball found out he was more productive when working standing. He did not have time to ‘take a break and then be distracted’.

Outside of working hours, he tried to stay in motion to divert attention from the fatigue of the legs and feet. He watched television and ate dinner standing, among other things.

He also managed his errands by going instead of driving, and he also tried to train without sitting down. Day 3, however, became the turning point of the 34-year-old influencer.

« It really hit my lower legs and feet. I felt very sore and tired, and I could feel that my attitude while I was standing was starting to get rid of, » Ball said.

« On top of that, I was extremely hungry too. Maybe because I burned several calories, but one thing I noticed was that when I ate, I thought less that I got up. And partly for that reason I was constantly eating all day. »

He could hardly wait to lie down so he could get his allowed eight hours of sleep. Eventually, his sleep began to deteriorate as his legs were so sore. He turned and turned for hours while trying to stretch them.

Ball ended the challenge ahead of time on the fifth day, where he also took stock of his experiment. He noticed that he had started hanging – his upper back was rounded – but his buttocks stuck out more.
