Now 27-year-old woman has been given the death sentence
When 27-year-old Julie Baarup Laustsen from Holstebro began to experience severe pain in the tailbone in 2021, she sounded an alarm with her doctor.
She was sent home with a cream against hemorrhoids, and in the following two years she had to insist several times that the pain did not disappear. Only after several medical visits did she get a scan and it revealed a tumor.

She was told that the tumor should be operated away and that everything should be good. But the pain continued and got worse.
With a check shortly after surgery, she was told that she should simply exercise, even if she could not walk 100 meters without having to sit down.
A new scan revealed that the tumor had never been removed. She underwent another operation, but this time the damage had happened. In January 2024, she got the message, she feared: The cancer had spread to the bones, and the doctors considered that she has about 15 years left to live in.
« I've been told by my cancer doctors that if they had taken me seriously from the start, I wouldn't have had incurable cancer now, » she says.
Several young cancer patients experience similar courses where the symptoms are rejected before a diagnosis is finally made. According to the Danish Cancer Society, this is a known problem.
« Unfortunately, we recognize the picture that some young people have to go to the doctor several times before being passed on to cancer, » says patient support director Pernille Slebsager.
Julie Baarup Laustsen hopes her story can make other young people stand firm to the doctors. She encourages patients to insist on studies before it's too late.
