Norway. The 135-meter ship almost hit the house, stopped in the garden
Although the event could end tragically, fortunately no one was hurt, and material destruction was limited to the surroundings of Johan Helberg’s property. After an accident that happened just before 5 am, the containerist settled agility. The first attempt to remove the ship from shallows was unsuccessful.
Norway. The 135-meter containerist stopped in front of the house
Johan Helberg, a resident of Byneset for 25 years, certainly did not expect that this is how he started his day. On Thursday, May 22, around 5 am he slept when a concerned neighbor called him. What he saw a moment later across the window stunned him
I had to bend my neck to see its peak. It was so unreal
Helberg reported in an interview with The Guardian.
Just behind his house, a huge containerist stopped, who for unexplained reasons left the course and ended his journey on the home lawn. Measuring 135 meters long, NCL Salten hit the edge of the fjord at a speed of about 30 km/h.
« Usually ships turn … »
As Helberg emphasizes, the situation was a complete surprise – also because such a situation in this region has never happened.
Usually ships turn left or right to the fjord. But he sailed straight ahead
– he explained.
In the event, no member of a 16-person crew suffered, consisting of Norwegians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians and Russians. There was also no oil leakage, which according to emergency services can be considered great happiness.
Why did the container man deviate from the course?
Police from the Trøndelag district conduct an intensive investigation, examining all possible scenarios – from technical failure to human error. According to police spokesman per Christian Stokke, One person has been identified on board the ship, towards whom the proceedings are pending as a suspect.
At the same time, North Sea Container Line (NCL), the owner of the unit, pointed out that an indication of a suspect is a standard procedure. The CEO of NCL, Bente Hetland, ensures that there are no grounds to think that the event was intentional.
– Such incidents should not take place and we started investigating their causes. Today we feel relieved that there was no injury, and we focus our main attention on people near the ship and our crew – emphasized Hetland.
