Employees from the non-profit sector are taking to the streets again this Thursday in Brussels, more than six months after the major mobilization of November 2024. The sector has a variety of requirements, but all those involved condemn the « saving policy » that is conducted at different levels of board.

The demonstration leaves at 11 am at the North Station and goes to Albertinaplein, near the Central Station. Children’s caregivers, family helpers, health care experts in hospitals, nurses in retirement homes, youth care providers, trajectory counselors in labor integration and also artworkers are expected.

« What binds them all is the saving policy. They are put under pressure from all sides, » says Nathalie Lionnet, federal secretary of the socialist trade union Setca. She speaks of an « explosive cocktail »: a structural staff shortage, the impact of the long -term sick, the aging population and increasing needs in the vicinity.

Especially affected women

The trade unions point, among other things, to measures from the federal government such as the extension of careers, limiting unemployment benefits and promoting part -time work. According to the Setca, these measures mainly affect women, who form between 76% and 99.5% of the workforce in the sector.

In Wallonia, the reform of the APE system (assistance with employment promotion) is also under fire. According to the sector, this reform threatens to undermine the stability of thousands of jobs in the socio-cultural and cultural sectors.

The non-profit sector therefore requires clear investment plans that take into account the needs of the population and avoid closures, and for attractive wage conditions and fully-fledged, qualitative full-time contracts.
