No one is represented by workers in Slovenian politics, but they vote for the right

At the work holiday, we wonder if we have a workplace party in Slovenia at all and who elects the working class. Is it increasingly resorting to populists and far right? Where are the main lines of class struggle? Sociologist and political analyst, dr. Gorazd Kovacic From the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, who is also a higher education trade unionist, he evaluated the government’s reform efforts in the podcast.

« In Slovenia, we do not have any clients who are a workers’ party in the classical sense, that is, to relish massively on the support of the industrial working class, » he says.

According to him, the Left, who advocates a series of classic left -wing reforms in the government – from long -term care to the separation of public and private healthcare for the work. But in particular, the party of an urban intellectual precarious and the cultural middle class remains. “The Left wants to be a work client, but failed to become a workers’ client. Its voters are highly educated people in major cities, especially in Ljubljana, who operate in the non -governmental sector, culture, education and media, « explains Kovačič.

Meanwhile, real industrial workers are politically dispersed – and often, as in many other European countries, they are more successfully addressed by the right. Not necessarily with social programs, but by addressing cultural values, a sense of threat and opposition to the elites.

Kordish’s attempt: Socialist renovation?

In this vacuum now a new initiative arose: the party me, the Socialists!, Established by the longtime Member of the Left Miha Kordishwho is an attempt to address disappointed and alienated workers who are not achieved by the modern Left, Kovacic Pozar that, if he wants to survive as a parliamentary party, he will have to exceed the activist niche of 500 members and gain support outside the radical left: « To be successful, he will have to address the wider people and work, not just his ideological. »

It also reminds of the inner tension inside the left, where for a long time, the rift between those who want to influence the institutions with compromises and those who swear by ideological purity and non -parliamentary activism. In his opinion, the secession of the Cordis is a logical consequence of this tension.

The traditional Workers’ Party, the Social Democrats (SD), has lost both identity and influence in the last decade, according to Kovacic. “Today, there are at least left -wing self -identification of all coalition parties among their voters. The SD is trapped in the affairs, the loss of support in the cities and the helplessness in the field, « he says. According to him, the party no longer has a clear class to rely on – it has lost both the union base and the intellectuals. « If they continue to define themselves as an article of a coalition without their own vision, they will finally disappear as an independent political force, » he adds.

Freedom Movement: Anti -Hand Association without a clear policy

With the largest government party, the freedom movement, Kovačič points to the complete absence of class or ideological identity. That she is an anti -aresist, charismatic party without a single program, says, adding that it contains LDS people, pigeons business acquaintances and random opportunists who have got the opportunity at the right time. Although Prime Minister Robert Golob often speaks in the language of solidarity, concrete decisions are often aligned with the neoliberal agenda. “Typically, the government has not yet implemented tax reform that would relieve the work and tax the property more. Why? Because it should deal with the elite, of which it is also part of itself, « Kovacic said.
