No longer can be paid with cash

As of June 1, it will no longer be possible to cash on cash on board the bus in the capital area.

This is stated inside Bus website. However, this does not apply to rural cars, as it will continue to be paid with cash or credit card.

It is stated on the homepage that a selection of payment options has increased and now it is possible to pay a credit card with a credit card on board all wagons within the capital area, but only 2.3% of customers now pay with cash on board the bus.

The Consumer Association did not take the matter for

In a conversation with mbl.is, Breki Karlsson, chairman of the Consumers’ Association, says that they have not taken the matter specifically, but he seems to be moving the arrangement to the same way as in most parts of the neighboring countries.

« In many places, it is only possible to pay for public transport with cards, telephones or any such. It is a great convenience for the driver and shortens travel time. This is also a convenience for most passengers, » says Breki.

Various stores that do not receive cash

Breki mentions that the Consumers’ Association has made an inquiry to the Central Bank of Iceland for some years, which concerned the duty of goods and services to receive cash.

« The Central Bank’s response was that it was not mandatory to receive cash as long as the unit that was behind it was the Icelandic krona, » says Breki.

He notes that there are various stores and service providers that do not receive cash, for example, certain fast food and postal service companies.

« We at the Consumers’ Association have not opposed it, but we have not taken this away. We still believe that cash is always necessary as a bargaining route if something comes up. »
