No change of course in the recognition of Palestine
The recognition of Palestine as a state, which will be discussed at a conference in New York from June 17th to 20th, has been linked to conditions for the Luxembourg government. Prime Minister Luc Frieden confirmed this on Tuesday afternoon during a current hour in the Chamber. He also announced his participation together with Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel (DP) in the conference.
At the initiative of the LSAP, the debate about the recognition of Palestine was again accepted. LSAP, Déi Lénk and Déi Gréng speak out for recognition without the conditions presented by Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel last Thursday. These include, for example, the deradicalization and the disarmament of Hamas. The participation of Arab states in the reconstruction of Gazas is also a condition.
This is what Xavier Bettel ties in the recognition of Palestine
LSAP MP Yves Cruchten criticizes the position of the Luxembourg government. He demands that all trade relationships with Israel should be stopped at both national and EU level. He criticizes the lack of sanctions on the part of the EU to Israel. The trade agreement is currently being checked. The LSAP MP is of the opinion that the government uses excuses so as not to recognize Palestine.
« Symbols have a high priority in diplomacy and international relationships, » emphasized Cruchten during the up -to -date lesson in the chamber.
Government parties remain in their position
However, CSV MP Laurent Mosar points out that the LSAP Palestine could have recognized in the former government. « Then we wouldn’t have this debate today, » he emphasizes. DP MP Gusty Graas also criticizes the LSAP on this point, especially since the LSAP foreign minister Jean Asselborn was in office for 19 years and Palestine was not recognized during this time.
Graas on Israel trade agreement: « Let’s say, I have become more skeptical »
According to the Mosar and Graas, the position of the government has not changed: it does not want to pursue a symbol policy. Prime Minister Frieden also considers Palestine recognition without the consent of other countries and without conditions as a symbol policy. For the head of government, it is important that every recognition of Palestine is linked to conditions that drive the two-state solution and ensure the future of the Palestinians.
Peace again emphasizes how Bettel has already done several times that Palestine’s recognition would be stronger by several EU countries than if Luxembourg did this on his own. He hopes that several countries, such as France, opt for recognition at the conference in New York next week. « A one-sided and only national position will not bring us closer to the two-state solution, » emphasizes Frieden.
