Nieuwsuur: Suspect of stabbing at Dam Square is Ukrainian deserteur
The man who is suspected of a stabbing at the end of March in the center of Amsterdam is a 30-year-old soldier from Ukraine. He would have been in active service at the time of the attack, but had shortly before received leave from his army command. That reports News hour Tuesday.
The stabbing took place at several locations around St. Nicolaasstraat, near the central station. In addition, five people were injured: two Americans, a pool, a Belgian and a Dutch one. The suspect would have attacked his victims with several knives. He was eventually overpowered with the help of a British tourist.
The suspect, who bears the name Roman D., comes from Donetsk, a region -occupied region in the east of Ukraine. He told his superior that he wanted leave to visit his mother, but traveled to the Netherlands instead. A day before the attack he checked in at a hotel in Amsterdam.
Former colleagues of the man explain to News hour That he had been talking about the desire to be imprisoned in Europe for a long time. He would have consciously worked towards a act of violence.
After the arrest, the police could not immediately determine their identity. The man turned out to be in possession of counterfeit identity papers from five other Ukrainian soldiers. Justice suspects him of attempted murder or manslaughter with a terrorist purpose.
