Pedagogical study days will still be organized next school year. That is what Flemish Minister for Education Zuhal Demir (N-VA) said on Thursday in parliament after a question from Loes Vromme (CD&V).
The new Flemish Coalition Agreement got rid of the pedagogical study day in secondary education. In primary education, the study days are limited to three half days.
However, Demir can allow an exception and wants to do so for the coming school year. « Because we will have a lot of work in the coming years with the minimum goals and professionalization on subject didactics and class management. I think it is useful to maintain the pedagogical study days next school year, but then in function of the reform that is coming in primary education, » she said. « I feel that the teachers’ corps indicates that it wants to cooperate, but they must be given the space to get lessons about it. »
Vandromme finds the possibility of exceptions a good thing. « Every employee, so also teachers must continue to train, » she said.
Schools can request the deviation until 23 May and receive a confirmation by the end of May at the latest. Secondary schools may organize one pedagogical study day and cannot ask for an exception.
