New strategy for increasing road safety and reducing accidents

Road Police Director Altin Qato informed today about measures taken to increase road safety in the country and reduce the number of accidents.

In a television interview, Qato stated that the opening of the National Traffic Monitoring Center will increase the identification of road violations, while also bringing citizens’ awareness of the implementation of the rules.

« In 2009 we had 324 accidents with a consequence, and years were 175. And we are advancing with the new Road Police strategy, which is being drafted. We have worked with all the factors related to road safety, we aim to achieve the goal, to reduce this figure, » he said.

According to Qato, the goal is zero accidents and this is the major objective, because the WHO’s target is to have zero accidents in 2050.

« But this is related to vehicle technology, infrastructure, and awareness. There are many factors not just the traffic police, » Qato said.

According to him, « about 26-27% of the accidents with consequence we have due to exceeding speed rates ».

« Therefore, our goal is to control and specify what are the permitted speed rates on an indefinite road axis. If there is exceeding the road norms, the traffic police take the punitive measure of the relevant offenders, » Qato said.
