The second part of the Pier 22 on the bank of the new Danube was opened. With a new sports field, adjustable power devices, two new cafes and lockers, in which you can store your valuables during bathing.
City councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) is visibly satisfied with the behavior of the residents of Vienna: « There have been no major signs of wear. »
On Monday morning, Sima is on the site of Pier 22 on the bank of the new Danube. On the area of the former Sunken City- the restaurant and local collections compared to the Copa Beach- there is a new leisure area for the Viennese at the U1 station Donauinsel.
In the previous year, the first section was opened – in good time for summer and a week before the Danube Island Festival. A year later, the second part almost follows the day. The heart is a large, covered sports field. The floor is still missing, at the moment it consists of gravel, which is due to the flood last year. « This has led to construction delays of seven to eight weeks, » explains Martin Jank from the city of Vienna’s management of the city, which is also responsible for the operation of the area.

A concept for public space was developed on the area, in which consumption -free zones in the form of seating with roofing, lying areas, sports facilities and better access to the water dominate. The gastronomy is kept relatively small with three local and food trucks (in the final expansion).
Outdoor jobs
Already in the previous year the 1st section the bank area was completely redesigned. With a large bridge, in which there are also layers of layers directly above the water. There is also a shallow water area for children. Also new at the time: Pergoles built in the style of waves, in which, in addition to the countless seating, individual seats can also be found in front of a kind of longer bar table. They are specially designed outdoor workstations. As originally planned, there are no sockets.

In any case, it is glad in the city that the area was well received from day 1 in the previous year and that relatively little vandalism took place, as the responsible city councilor Sima mentioned at the beginning. « We rely on the responsibility of the users. We simply believe that good things will also be preserved, » says Mark Neuner from the architecture firm « Mostlikely » to the « press », which has also developed the new construction of the Cobenzl on Höhenstrasse.
Smart solutions for everyday problems
For the second section opened on Monday, you have come up with (again) smart solutions for everyday problems. From now on there are small lockers on Pier 22, where you can include valuables and backpacks so that you don’t have to worry about your things when bathing. Some of these lockers (that in addition to the self -cleaning toilets at the northern end of the area) are also provided with sockets. However, this is not apparent from the outside.
« We just want to take a look at everything, » says Martin Jank from Wiener Water Management. Also how long the lockers can remain closed. You don’t want to take any permanent users, but at the moment it is not the case that after 24 hours all lockers are opened and cleared.
Waiting for the sports floor
The covered sports field is also – the missing sports floor should come in one to two months – almost in a test phase. He is not yet curated. Means: Whoever is there can use it. According to Jank, it will be shown whether this works in reality.
In addition to the large sports field, the second large innovation is a separate large fitness place with strength devices with rings or fixed kettlebells. The highlight this time: The weights of the devices can be set individually, which is not the case in other sports fields, emphasized NEOS club chief Selma Arapovic at the opening. For bathing-or after sports-there are also showers on the area and in three places new toilet facilities.
