New spider species from southern Europe reaches Luxembourg

It is an unusual discovery: For the first time, the Spider Saitis Barbipes in Luxembourg could be discovered, as the National Museum of Natural History (MNHNL) announced in a press letter. The jumping spider was discovered by an employee of the museum in the south of the country at the beginning of the month.

The spiders are small and only reach a body length of five to six millimeters. « The males of this spring spider are known for their bright colored, fan -like legs, » says the letter.

Consequence of climate change

« Saitis barbipes is considered a heat -loving species that typically occurs in the southern regions of Europe, » says Guy Colling from the Mnhnl, who discovered the spider. « Your appearance in Luxembourg is an extraordinary find – and at the same time a clear example of the changes that become visible here as a result of climate change ».

The discovery of the spider is not an isolated individual case. Researchers from the museum have already discovered several types of insects from southern Europe in Luxembourg. « These propagation agreed with climate data that show that the average annual temperature in Luxembourg has risen by about 1.5 degrees since the 1960s-and thus creates cheaper conditions for species that have so far been limited to warmer southern climate zones, » concludes the museum.
