'New' SMS fraud empties your account in just a few clicks
With at least 150,000 sent text messages, the man caused the victims to click on a link that led to a fake website.
Here they were asked to enter their personal information, including debit card information, which he then used for illegal transactions.
The scam is adapted to the visual experience we know from official sides like borger.dk, and it has made it difficult for many to distinguish between the real and the fake.
The fake website imitated to the point and prick what many expect from official pages.
But in reality, many unsuspecting Danes have thus put their information in the hands of scammers who are able to empty their accounts in just a few clicks.
With the information collected, the perpetrator could abuse the debit cards digitally via Wallet functions – without physically having access to the cards.
In a post of X, the police circle encourages citizens to take good care of if it receives a text message that looks suspicious:
« When you receive these types of inquiries – whether on SMS, mail or telephone – where the inquiry leads to entering your card information, it is important to look after and even examine whether it is a real website. »
The case testifies that online fraud is still a major problem at home, although various traps are often warned.
It is therefore worth and keep in mind that inquiries from authorities, bank, pension companies and so on will most often be done via e-Box or MitID.
