New rules for standby appliances

The rules that apply boundaries to energy that can be used by appliances and other electrical appliances while not in use (standby) have been in force since Friday and aims to energy savings.

In a statement issued Monday, the European Commission states that the rules to limit the energy that can be consumed by appliances that are in the homes of citizens are in force while not in active use.

With these rules, the community executive foresees a 4TWH savings (four Terawatts per hour) per year by 2030, « the equivalent of almost double the annual consumption of electricity in Malta and sufficient to give power to over one million electric cars. »

At the same time, it simultaneously reduces 1.4 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The estimate is a savings 530 million euros per year by 2030.

The rules require detailed power consumption information in Standby mode (while not being used) so that consumers can consult and apply to products manufactured from May 9th.

They include Wi-Fi routers, Wireless columns, and even electronic furniture parts such as curtains and secretaries.
