New parking garage at Diekirch station – initially usable free of charge

The new parking garage at the train station in Diekirch has been in operation since Thursday. With a total of 649 parking spaces, it offers a noticeable relief for commuters and visitors to the city. It can be used free of charge in a first phase.

The 14.5 -meter -high building extends over an area of ​​51 AR and comprises nine staggered half -levels. It is located at the intersection of Rue de l’ustrie and Avenue de la Gare- on the site of the former P&R of the CFL and the former parking lot of the natural and forest management (ANF). 150 parking spaces are specially reserved for their employees.

Since the area is located in a designated flood area, the parking garage was designed as an open, covered building. Rainwater of sealed areas is collected in an open retention basin with a capacity of 61 m³.

The project also sets new standards in terms of sustainability: On the roof, photovoltaic modules create environmentally friendly electricity, 60 parking spaces are equipped with charging stations for electric vehicles. In addition, around half of the building is green – with hops, clematis and vines that not only donate shadows, but also upgrade the cityscape.

A contribution to the turnaround in traffic

« The new parking garage is part of Diekirch’s traffic concept. This aims to make the city unattractive for cars and to grant priority to pedestrians, » said the city administration. The free use in the initial phase should make it easier to switch to the new offer and promote acceptance among commuters and visitors.

Information about the later tariffs and for the exact functionality of the following time. The future name of the parking garage has not yet been determined: the population was invited to submit names. The final decision will be announced as part of the official inauguration in September.
