New EU Proposal: Easier to send out asylum seekers
The European Commission’s new proposal means that it will be much easier than before to send back an asylum seeker who, on the way to the EU, moved through a country that can be considered safe.
The asylum seeker must no longer have a connection to the country – for example through family there, or residents there for a long time. Instead, it should be enough to have passed through the country during their journey to the EU.
« Completely in the right direction, » says Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M).
– It is a very important step in getting a more sustainable asylum system and reducing asylum immigration to Europe and making it more fair. This means that people who have passed a safe third country should be returned there and do the asylum test there, he tells TT.
Human rights organizations are all the more critical.
« Not only chaotic and arbitrary but also devastating at human level, » said Olivia Sundberg Diez from Amnesty International in a press release.
The proposal also makes it possible For EU countries to sign agreements with countries that are considered secure to handle asylum procedures there-even if it is not allowed to be allowed to send unaccompanied children and young people.
A similar system tried to introduce the UK’s previous government with the help of Rwanda. For example, Denmark has also been in the same thing.
However, the European Commission emphasizes that the agreements must comply with EU law, for example that a country can only be considered safe if it meets a wide range of criteria for protection and freedoms.
