New cell phone rules on Lyzen in Luxembourg from Pentecost

From now on apply to Luxembourg’s Lyzeen New regulations for dealing with smartphones. The aim is to strengthen the focus in everyday school life and minimize digital distractions. The Ministry of Education had made three variants to choose from, one of which is mandatory: cell phones must be eliminated during class and kept out of reach.

The implementation of the new regulations is the responsibility of the schools themselves, with two additional options – the furnishings of cell phone -free zones and age -graded complete bans – were voluntarily taken up, but were taken up by many lyzen.

Complete ban at five secondary schools

While six public schools stay with the prescribed minimum size, 32 continues. Five out of a total of 38 lyzen even rely on the strictest variant: the Lycée Bel-Val, the German-Luxembourgische Schengen-Lyzeum Perl, the Lycée Ermesinde, the École Internationale Gaston Thorn and the École Internationale Anne Beffort. There, pupils have to hand in their devices in the morning from June 2 and only get them back after school.

The six lyzen, which only implement the mandatory ban during class, are mostly schools without a lower level. These include the École de Commerce et de Gesion (ECG), the École Nationale de Santé du Luxembourg (Ltps), the École d’hôtellerie et de Tourisme du Luxembourg, the Lycée Technique Pour Professions Éducaticals ET Sociales (LTPES), the Lycée Guillaume Kroll International Mondorf-les-bains.

Own set of rules on 27 lyzeen

Individual regulations apply at other schools. The use of smartphones in the basement and the first floor is prohibited in the Lycée Aline Mayrisch – where classes 7 in particularE up to 5E stop. The devices are kept in closed cupboards, and youth clubs and school café are also shown as smartphone -free zones. The Lycée Technique du Center has introduced an age -inferior model: a complete ban on use applies to the lower classes throughout the school day – including breaks.

At Lycée Robert Schuman, students in grades 7E up to 4E Leave your smartphones in a locked closet throughout the morning. The Lycée de Garçons de Luxembourg (LGL) introduces a stricter measure from the school year 2025/2026: The devices of the lower classes are kept in bags with a magnetic closure throughout the school day.

Even smaller impulses shape the new regulations: At the Lycée Technique de Lallange, there is a “cell phone Fraie Mëttwed” every Wednesday in the youth club. The Bouneweger Lycée (LTB) limits the use in the school restaurant and the cafeteria. The Maacher Lycée has set up so -called « Zones de Déconnexion », which are characterized by floor markings. They should promote digital breaks and draw attention to social interaction and school activities. In addition, a chill-out area with games, books and a printed school newspaper was created.

Increased filters and additional security

In addition to the restriction of cell phone use, the school infrastructure is also more secure. In order to better protect young people from inappropriate or potentially dangerous content, WLAN and LAN compounds will be secured in the future by increased filters and additional security measures. Access to the « Eduroam » network is limited to students aged 15 and over.

Despite the restrictions, the iPad remains a central tool in many Lyzen. The aim is to prepare students for a digital learning environment at an early stage. Differentiated regulations apply in the future – especially in the lower level, where there is often not yet sufficient digital media literacy.
