New Attorney General warns of attacks on the judiciary
The new Attorney General John Petry warns of attacks on the judiciary and the rule of law. The goal is a resilient judiciary, said Petry during his office speech on Thursday, in which Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Justice Minister Elisabeth Margue and Interior Minister Léon Gloden (all CSV) took part.
Petry referred to the United States, among other things, in which the judiciary and its independence have been under constant fire since Donald Trump took office. Liberal democracy was also on the defensive in Europe, according to the new Attorney General. There are still no authoritarian tendencies in Luxembourg who want to undermine the judiciary and the rule of law, but John Petry demands more resilient. The judiciary must remain independent and should not be misused for political purposes.
As early as February, Petry said that his goal was to open the judiciary more to the public and also to provide more transparency towards the media and press.
