New Art Hall in Nacka – in hundreds of years old hospital
In the mid-16th century, Gustav Vasa founded Danviken’s hospital in Nacka. In the 18th century, the building that is preserved today was erected. In the 19th century, the building was a home for the mentally ill.
In 2020, Gullringsbo acquired properties the old hospital. After restorations, in May 2025, they opened the Hospital Art Hall, where both Gullringsbo’s own art collection and the international gallery Carl Kostyál have moved in permanently.
– We found the house through an auction at Kronofogden. I fell in love – but also disturbed because it was so down. The sheet roof had been torn down, cut down roof beams, drilled and milled away the inside. It was obvious that we would take care of the fantastic house and showcase our art collection in it, says Erika Hellman, initiator behind the hospital and co -owner of Gullringsbo properties.
What does Gullringsbo contain art collection?
– It is contemporary art that we have bought for the past 15 years. We buy the majority of art internationally and art that may not be so reachable for common Swedish. We want to spread the art. At the hospital we show a selection of 70 works by 46 artists from all different corners.
Is there any work you are particularly proud to show off?
-New York-based Austin Lee has created a pink horse we have outside the entrance. Along with the stone it stands on, it is about three meters high. It will be a symbol of the hospital, a kind of landmark.
