The figures show large differences between the provinces. 34 percent of all candidate tenants live in the province of Antwerp and also give up a municipality in that province as a preferred municipality. In the provinces of Flemish Brabant and Limburg, the number of prospective tenants is lower, with 11 and 12 percent of the total respectively.
The government provides this legislature with 6 billion euros for social housing. Depraetere wants to address all cities and municipalities for their responsibility. She promises a new binding social objective (BSO), which will start in 2026. The minimum effort is recorded in the BSO that municipalities must do.
« In recent years, the policy was too LAKS for municipalities that did not do their share and thus abandon their residents, » she says. « We are going to do that differently now. Municipalities that do not do their share will have to contribute to the rental premium for those who are waiting for a social home. So that is direct support for people waiting for a social home. »
