Nennig reveals the plaque for murdered Luxemburger
Last Saturday there was a commemorative ceremony in the German town in honor of several Luxemburger and French, which were part of the resistance to the Nazis in 1944. The event was carried out by students from the Saarburg high school, the « Association NS Family History e. V. « organized from Göttingen, the municipality of Perl and the Sparkasse Trier.
The program included several program items. The event was initiated with a piece of music at the Saarburg high school. This was followed by greetings from the Mayor Uhlenbruch and the headmaster Andreas Schreiner. Further speeches came from Katrin Raabe from the association « NS Family History e. V. » and George Crociati from the association « Les Enfants de Joudrevillle ”.
Subsequently, students left the biographies of the victims from 1944. At the end of the event, the plaque on the outer wall of the cemetery in Nennig was unveiled. Since official and descendants from France also traveled, the entire event was kept in German and French.
But what was it all about?
During the Second World War there were crimes against Luxembourg and French resistance fighters in the region. French citizens Marcel Voyat, Henri Uguccioni and Edmond Helck were arrested on September 4, 1944. Just a few days later, on September 8, 1944, they were shot in Palzem. It is particularly shattering that with Edmond Helck, a 16-year-old was one of the victims.
Executions also occurred in Nennig. On September 8th or 9, 1944, the French citizens Georges Claudon and Germaine Causier and the Luxemburger Émile Deiskes were executed there. Two other Luxembourgers, Michel Bockler and Nicolas Weiwers, were previously arrested in Düdelingen and probably also killed in Nennig. However, the exact circumstances are still unclear.
German students put a monument to Luxembourg fighter
The deeds were forgotten for a long time, but the historical course of the Saarburg high school gave the victims and a voice with the « Memorial Project Palzem and Nennig ». The students were made by the association « NS Family History e. V. » from Göttingen, which deals with the events of the Second World War in the large region. The “Luxembourg Word” reported the project last year.
The memorial event with the subsequent unveiling of the plaque now formed the highlight of the research of everyone involved.
