NATO chief says Russia could schedule nuclear weapons in space
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told the newspaper that NATO was aware that Russia was considering installing nuclear weapons in space.
He called the current abilities of Moscow in the universe outdated and unparalleled with the abilities of the West. Therefore, Rutte said, the development of nuclear weapons in space to Russia could enable to improve his abilities, which he said was a great source of concern.
The so -called anti -Satellite weapon is not directed towards the earth but to satellites, but their destruction could cause chaos on the planet because they depend on the functioning of many systems.
Rutte warned of a potential violation of the 1967 Universe Agreement, which binds the signing countries to the peaceful use of the universe. The contract was ratified by most countries, including Russia and the United States.
NATO Secretary General said that in recent years, the universe competition has become much more intense and that the environment there has never been so crowded, dangerous and unpredictable.
This is not only valid for the commercial area, but also affects the defense, and therefore the security at all, Rutte added.
According to a newspaper report, NATO has decided that the clause on mutual defense under Article 5 also refers to the attacks from the universe and in the universe.
Article 5 says an armed attack on one or more NATO Member States is considered an attack on all. The mutual defense clause was activated only once the Union supported the United States after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
