Nathan Shachar: Netanyahu is mocked for statements in Hungary

During the four long -term visit, both leaders poured compliments and favors over each other. Netanyahu paid tribute to Hungary as Israel’s faithful friend in a hostile world:

– Hungary defends us in the EU, in the UN and against the courts of The Hague.

Parades of honorary guards in magnificent mounds accompanied both leaders during a series of events. During the visit, Orbán announced that Hungary leaves the International Criminal Court in The Hague, ICC, as called for Netanyahu.

The guest was promoted to honorary doctor at the state university lup, « for its historical efforts ». During his speech, Netanyahu told me that he once asked his father, historian Benzion Netanyahu, which is a leader’s most important trait:

– He said it is important to have a vision, and to be purposeful. But the decisive thing, he said, is formation. « Without education you will happen to the claws of the officials! »

What the father historian really meant by « The officials », continued Netanyahu, is « The Deep State »-the Turkish concept that Netanyahu and Donald Trump recently made their own. The « deep state » that Netanyahu considers itself to fight consists of Israel’s free press and its – so far – independent judicial system.

Netanyahu compared During his speech Hungary and Israel, two nations that « got out of the ashes » after disasters; Hungary after the First World War, when most of its territory lost, and Israel after the Holocaust. Not in a word did the Prime Minister affect Hungary’s leaders and political movements actively contributed to the Holocaust, often so effectively that Nazi Germany did not have to devote its own resources to the project.

The unwillingness to utter a critical word about Hungary has rendered Netanyahu a lot of smäke at home. In an attempt at fun, he said about his first visit to Hungary 1991:

– Then I didn’t know anything about Hungary, the only thing I knew was goulash and (football star Ferenc) Puskás.

This was less successful, Given the deep education that the Prime Minister just before praised. In a furious column the following day, he received answers to speech in Israel’s largest newspaper, Yediot Ahronot. Shimon Shiffer, for many years the country’s leading political commentator, wrote:

« Well, you only knew about Puskás and goulas! Not to mention this? You should be ashamed! ”

Israel’s president Isaac Herzog, usually unwilling to give up in the political hot air, commented on Monday Netanyah’s very speech a week about the deep state:

– The government must obey the laws. There is no « deep state » here. What is available are dedicated government employees, who sometimes have to ask why they should make an effort when bombarded with dirt and false accusations.

Since the ICC court’s search for him last year, Netanyahu can visit few European countries without the risk of being arrested. Hungary, Germany and Belgium have made it clear that they do not intend to arrest him.
