Narva is preparing for the new school year against the background of personnel deficit in schools. According to preliminary estimates, from 70 to 150 teachers may not be enough in the city.

“We really can’t say exactly how much it will not be enough. You can name the numbers 70 and 150 – and both will be true, ”explained Larisa Degel, head of the department of culture and education of the Narva Goroprava. The situation depends on the results of the exams in the Estonian language: 40 teachers are now testing, but the average level of success is only 20%.

The deficit is caused by several factors at once. One of the main ones is the requirements for owning the Estonian language at the level of B2 and above. In addition, difficulties are caused by a system of fixed -term employment contracts that the legislation limits. “Teachers are not sure of the future. Their contract ends in August, and competitions are in parallel. People do not know whether they will remain to work since September, ”said Degel.
There is also an acute lack of support specialists – speech therapists, psychologists, special pedagogues. “We announced competitions for two years, and not a single suitable candidate came,” she added.
The city is considering non -standard decisions. In particular, it is possible to introduce new bets of methodologists at the expense of the city budget in order to preserve the most qualified teachers.
“If we want to save at least 5-6 people, we will need about 200 thousand euros per year. You may have to reconsider the costs inside the system, ”added the mayor of the city of Katri Raik.
The situation remains intense, but work on the search for solutions continues. In August, it is planned to resume the campaign to attract new teachers when the results of language exams are known.
