Nadia El Bouroumi, the controversial lawyer for the Mazan trial, sentenced to a year of suspended suspension – Liberation

Four months after the closure of the Mazan rape trial, where the 46 -year -old Avignon lawyer, who defended two of the 50 accused tried alongside Dominique Pelicot, had multiplied the outrageous, the Regional Disciplinary Council of the Nîmes Court of Appeal condemned it this Wednesday, February 23 to a year of suspension, according to information by Vaucluse (ex-France blue). A sentence less severe than that of eighteen months of suspension required by the Advocate General during the hearing, which was held on February 19.

It was for facts before the Mazan trial that a disciplinary procedure had been launched, on the initiative of the Avignon bar. In question, images which could have been shot between 2021 and 2023 during audiences, which is strictly prohibited, but also ethical questions related to the creation of coaching companies in « Personal and professional development ». Nadia El Bouroumi was thus found guilty of having « Continue to the ethical rules of the profession of lawyer by being the majority shareholder of a commercial company providing coaching services while this activity is not related to the profession of lawyer «  and to have been « President of a commercial company whose corporate purpose covers the activities of the profession of lawyer without being registered with the bar or subject to its rules ».

The lawyer will also have to follow 20 hours of training in ethics and will no longer be part of the lawyer or the National Council of the Bar. On the other hand, the disciplinary council released it for the publication of photos of audiences on social networks. Nadia El Bouroumi has already indicated to our colleagues by Vaucluse by the voice of her lawyer whom she was going to appeal to her conviction.

For controversial outings of the forties during the Mazan rape trial, no disciplinary procedure has yet been initiated. The lawyer had stood out in the first days of hearing, multiplying the wreckled reactions on the grounds that the rights of the defense were flouted, or abused the victim, sometimes screaming, under the dumbfounded eyes of the journalists who discovered her.

It is on September 18, while intimate photos of Gisèle Pelicot were broadcast for the first time in the room, that the lawyer reveals the tone of her defense, her two customers pleading non -guilty. She does not let go of Gisèle Pelicot of the gaze, asserts her with questions putting her in a referral, cutting her speech again and again. She criticizes him, for example, for having accepted the broadcasting of the videos of his rapes – « I am a woman, I am embarrassed » -, point the finger at the photos of her in underwear- « Can you admit that men, receiving photos like these on the coco.fr site, could imagine that you would be someone who would agree to make a sexual game? » … Gisèle Pelicot had ended up exploding: « What are we looking for in this room? » To what I am guilty? «  Before the start of the resumption of the audience that day, Nadia El Bouroumi, had turned with a smile to the journalists’ bench by whispering: « You knew that real estate had dropped in Mazan ? « 

Beyond his offensives at the hearing, it is mainly his videos, posted on Tiktok and his Instagram account with 52,000 subscribers, who swelled his notoriety outside the courthouse. On September 20, when the trial entered her third week, she staged herself in her dancing car on the title of Wham! Wake me up before you go -Translate « wake me up before leaving »-even though the victim’s chemical submission, drugged to sleep by her husband before being raped by strangers, is at the heart of the trial.

Faced with an outcry, Nadia El Bouroumi pleads the misinterpretation – the song would have been chosen « At random » in his playlist and addressed those who were looking for « muzzle » -, and denounce the « harassment » of which she says she is a victim. At the time, the Bâtonnier d’Avignon, Philippe Cano, had chosen to delay: « The freedom of expression of the lawyer is fundamental in the exercise of the rights of the defense, both during a trial and outside a courtroom »he wrote in a press release, all the same pointing the need for « Respect for ethical rules » of the profession. And the Bâtonnier to evacuate, for the moment in any case, the question of a possible disciplinary procedure, which « Cannot take place under any pressure whatsoever ».

His last post, a few days after his hearing by the disciplinary council on February 19, comes down to a « reminder » :: « The action saved me, the words soothed me! » His lawyers have already announced that if the suspension decision was acted, they would appeal.
