Munich city council wants to apply for Olympics
The Munich city council decided to apply as an organizer of Olympic and Paralympic summer games. Against the votes of ÖDP/Munich-List and the left/party, the vast majority of the body spoke out to ensure that the state capital is supposed to protect the worldwide -respected sporting event in 2036, 2040 or 2044. However, the last word about the application will have the Munich residents: The city council also decided to have a citizens’ decision for October 26th – the project should not be pursued without approval.
Proponents hope for positive impulses for Munich from Olympics
The supporters of the Olympic application, including the Bavarian State Government and the Association of the Bavarian Economy, hope for numerous impulses for the further development of the region, from urgently needed expansion of local public transport to numerous new apartments to advertising for tourists. Among other things, the opponents fear the financial risk and further increasing living costs and rents. Both camps gave their opinion before the session in a small demonstration in front of the town hall.
In 1972 the Olympic Games in Munich were overshadowed by terror
Should the surcharge go to Munich at the end of the long application process, it would be the second time that Olympic Games would come to the Bavarian capital. Despite the fatal attack of Palestinian terrorists, the major event from 1972 went to the Israeli team as « the cheerful games » in the memory and has left the city numerous infrastructure and other facilities.
