At noon on Sunday, May 11, crowds of the faithful gathered in St. Piotr, to hear the first such speech of the new Pope – Leon XIV. Franciszek’s successor spoke for the first time in public as a bishop of Rome, thus starting his spiritual mission at a unique moment – on Sunday of the Good Shepherd.
Leon XIV’s first speech – a day full of symbols
Just before noon, Leon XIV appeared on the balcony of the Basilica of St. Piotr. Brothers and sisters, we remember the tragedy of World War II, which ended 80 years ago, on May 8. In this context, when World War III takes place in pieces, as Pope Francis repeated many times, I turn to the great of this world: I repeat the appeal always current – never again war.

« Let the children return to families » – an appeal to the consciences of the world
The Holy Father also called for humanitarian gestures towards conflict victims: « Let the prisoners be released and the children return to their families, » he said with pressure.
He hoped with good news from Asia: – I was happy to accept the news about interrupting the conflict between India and Pakistan.
