Mother’s Day 2025: When is and how to thank Mom
Modern Mother’s Day was created in America.
Mother’s Day is always celebrated in Slovakia on the second Sunday of May. In 2025 it falls at 11 May.
Mother’s Day is a celebration in honor of mothers, motherhood and women who hold maternal roles. The date of the celebrations varies according to countries, for example in Britain, it is celebrated in March.
Fathers also have their day. Father’s Day is celebrated every June on the third Sunday, which is released on 15 June this year.

The origin of the Mother’s Day
Motherhood celebrations have a long tradition.
The ancient frygs celebrated the goddess Mother Cybelé, the Greeks again the Mother of the Olympic gods Rheia, and the ancient Romans have adopted similar celebrations.
In the Middle Ages, it was customary for people who moved out of the house that they set out to visit their mothers on the fourth Sunday. This day was referred to as Maternity Sunday.
However, the modern appearance of Mother’s Day feast originates in the United States, where it is also celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
Julia Ward How wanted to promote modern motherhood celebrations. However, her efforts were not successful.
Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia is so known as the founder of the Mother’s celebration Day. The Mother’s Feast tried to introduce at the beginning of the 20th century. In essence, the holiday originated as a memory of her deceased mom, who was involved in joining women and female health.
In May 1907, she organized a memorial service for her mother and within five years almost every state in the US celebrated the Mother’s Day. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day as a national holiday.
Carnations began to be associated with the holiday – white for deceased mothers and pink or red for living mothers. Companies gradually began to push out to give people gifts to their mothers during the day and send them greetings. Jarvis did not like the commercialization of the holiday and the last years of her life has been trying to cancel it.
Mother’s Day in Slovakia
Modern Mother Day celebrations began in 1923 in Czechoslovakia. The holiday to our territory was brought by Alica Masaryková, daughter of Tomáš Garrigu Masaryk and American mother Charlotte Garrigue Masaryk.
The Communists replaced the feast with celebrations of International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8. After the Velvet Revolution, however, both days began to be celebrated in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. However, neither is an official public holiday.
