Mother -in -law disseminate knowledge at the university of young people
The mothers Margrét Valdimarsdóttir and María Rós Kaldalón did not know that they were both teaching at the University of Young People until they arrived at work on the first day.
« She has forgotten to tell me about this she Mary, she thinks this may be less remarkable than me, » says Margrét in a conversation with mbl.is and laughs.
The Young People’s University began on Tuesday and will run until Friday. At the University of the Young People, children and adolescents are given a variety of agenda related to the various disciplines.
Mary, who graduates this weekend with a BA degree in software engineering, will teach programming and computer technology as well as taking care of computer technology theme day. Margrét teaches criminal science this week, but she is an associate professor of social and criminal science.
A journalist mbl.is caught up with those mothers and talked to them about the University and the teaching.
Proud of the daughter
Margrét says it is very fun that both mothers should be taught at the university. « I’m very proud of her, » she adds.
Mary has been an assistant teacher, or a example teacher, in software engineering this winter, but now takes on teaching at the University of Young People for the first time. Mary says it is very fun to teach and says she can think of teaching more in the future.
« It could be fun to teach one and one course in the future, » says Maria.
There were both assistant teachers.
Margrét says it has not come as a surprise that Mary has become an assistant teacher. She says it is a pleasant coincidence that she herself was also an assistant teacher along with her undergraduate studies. « There is something in our genes that I don’t know what is, some ambition there, » says Margrét.
Margrét says these mothers enjoy discussing their teaching. She says Mary has only applied to her mom, not much though, but that they enjoyed each other’s stories.
Margrét teaches kids criminal science
Margrét teaches the kids who attend the course Crime. She says the kids who attend criminal science at the University of the Young People’s University are very interested. Attendance to the project is high and the kids have come as a surprise. « They find this interesting and are already thinking about these topics, » says Margrét.
« These findings are sensible and their explanations are in line with theories of criminal science, » she adds. She also says they come up with sensible solutions to problems, such as prevention and psychology services.
Margrét reports on increased interest in the scholar. Asked if she thinks this interest is the result of a social debate about violence among young people, she says it is difficult to say with certainty, but it seems to be so.
She clearly says the kids are wondering about this. They are informed of the biggest issues in the debate and are interested in discussing these issues. « I think it is useful for them to discuss this and wonder what happens now and who is the aftermath and such. »
Wants to arouse an interest in programming
Mary says she is mainly promoting the kids for programming. She hopes that the teaching will interest, especially in those who do not know what programming is.
« Of course, this is not taught in all elementary schools and is therefore new to some and it will be fun to present the study to those who do not know this, » says Maria.
She says the university of young people is important. « There is a lot of study programs that children of primary school age know nothing at all and even in high school, » says Maria. She says she often needs to explain to young people who attend the University Day, and are wondering about undergraduate study program, what engineering is. It is therefore great that the kids get to know the study programs and working routes that they did not know existed.
Important to arouse interest in college education
Margrét says the University of Young People’s University is a fun project. « These are elementary school kids and it is fun to give them insight into the future and possible opportunities in education, » says Margrét.
They are in great shaping years and it is good to arouse their interest in college.
