The fire started just before 9 pm in the staircase of an apartment building on the Sint-Bernardsesteenweg in Hoboken, between the second and third floor. « We quickly had the fire under control and the fire was quickly extinguished, » says Jasmien O of the fire brigade zone Antwerp. « Because a lot of smoke was created and many residents were in the building, the medical intervention plan was announced. » This ensures that there are certainly enough ambulances available to take care of and transport any injured people.

The fire brigade evacuated the residents present. « A few were taken off the roof with the ladder car, » said O. eight of the residents present sustained smoke intoxication and were taken to the hospital. « Among them also a mother and her two children. They are very ready, » says police spokesman Wouter Bruyns. During the intervention, a firefighter and a policeman were also slightly injured.
It is not yet clear how the fire originated, but bad intent is not excluded. The police have started an investigation into possible arson. In the meantime, a resident was also arrested. « We investigate whether there was arson and investigate the involvement of the suspect, » said Bruyns.
Whether the residents of the apartments can return home later is also clear. « At the moment we are fully engaged in ventilating the building, » says firefighter O.
