« We were contacted around 7.20 pm about a kitchen fire that broke out on the fourth floor of the building in the Laiteriestraat, » said firefighter Walter Derieuw.
A pan with overheated oil had caught fire. The resident of the apartment then took the pan and placed it on a table on the balcony. « The balcony then also started to catch fire, » said Derieuw.
The mother and her child, who were stuck on the balcony, could be evacuated through a fire ladder, just like the residents on the third floor. The other residents could escape via the stairwell.
The mother and the child were taken to the hospital with slight smoking poisoning. The mother had burns on her hands and forearms. The apartments involved were ventilated and the residents could return
The fire brigade recommends buying a fryer with a built -in thermostat to prevent overheating of the oil and therefore this type of fire. If the oil starts to burn in a fryer or saucepan, it is also advisable to switch off the gas or electricity supply and cover the pan with a lid. « Don’t move the burning object, » Derieuw concludes.
