Mother accused of murdering a child 55 years after death
This is a story that freezes blood – not only through the tragic finale, but also through the words that have fallen on paper. Mother’s words about her own son. Written over half a century ago, today they came back and became strong proof. It was they who led Alice Bunch from Louisiana in the United States straight behind bars. But let’s go back to the beginning of this story. On January 19, 1970, a 16-month-old boy was hospitalized in Sulphur. Doctors saw a massacred body – numerous bruises, fractures of the skull and shoulder, traces of bites, burn on the buttocks. The child died the next morning while the surgery attempted attempt.
His mother, 20-year-old Alice, said: her son fell off the bed. The father of the child, Earl could not do anything – he served abroad, during the Vietnam war. The authorities did not find sufficient evidence or did not want to look for them. The case has been closed. It seemed that forever …
Lists full of hate
Truth tried to break to the surface of summer later. First in 1985 – during the divorce battle and the fight to care for the second child. It was then that the content of letters that Alice wrote to her husband in 1969 was revealed. They were shocking. Their content was later published by the court.
- « I just got through by whipping this little bastard. I hate him. This is honest » – wrote his mother on November 4, 1969.
- « I will kill him before it breaks down, » she added in the next letter two weeks later.
- « I hate your son. I regret that he is dead … I feel that if he died tomorrow, it would not care. For me he destroys my life » – this is a fragment of another letter to my husband.
There were more letters. Their content showed that Alice experienced deep depression, hatred and frustration – but did not seek help. Instead, she wrote about violence against the child. The husband read these letters in Thailand and – as he testified – « he could not believe that the woman he loved could hurt a child. » However, the investigators did nothing at the time. The doctor’s relationship was not even taken into account. In the 70s, no one seriously wanted to deal with the matter, because it seemed inconceivable. He was blindly believed in the assurance of an unfortunate accident.
Doctor: « It looked like a beating »
In court documents you can find the relationship of a doctor who was the first to accept little Earl. The doctor had doubts:
– These were not injuries after falling from the cot. It looked like a child who was beaten. As if someone took them by the legs and hit a piece of furniture or a wall – according to his opinion.
He also drew attention to his mother’s behavior in the hospital: – She wasn’t shaken, she didn’t cry. She stood in the corner, silent. I would call her emotional state a cool, even indifferent.
A breakthrough after half a century
It wasn’t until 2022 – at the request of the child’s family – the police in Sulphur resumed the investigation. The detectives obtained permission to exhume the boy’s body and transferred the remains to the FBI. The autopsy confirmed: It was a murder.
