Most people are injured in the household – Diepresse.com

The number of injuries in the event of accidents rose by three percent in 2024. Around 335,000 people injured themselves in the household last year.

In the previous year, more than 800,000 people were so seriously injured in Austria in the event of accidents that they had to be treated in the hospital. That is three percent more than in 2023, as the Board of Trustees for Road Safety (KFV) and the Insurance Association announced in a press conference on Monday. Most accidents happen in the household. Around 335,000 people were injured in their own four walls.

Many people are also injured in leisure activities. There were around 265,000 in the previous year. There were 112,000 injuries in the working and school area and 92,000 in road traffic. To determine these figures, the KFV has managed 18,800 interviews with accident victims in 15 large Austrian hospitals.

Costs for treatments increased

The treatment costs rose by five percent to EUR 2.74 billion in 2024 compared to the year before. There is a dramatic development in children (0 to 14 years), says Christian Schimanofsky, director of the KFV. Here the number of injuries in 2024 rose to five percent disproportionately. Children are most often injured in the household, young people in their free time. Household accidents clearly dominate the senior citizens.

In the leisure area there is a strong increase in accidents in so -called adventure sports, such as hiking, climbing and mountaineering. Football is sport with the most injuries. In the previous year there were around 39,200. The number of accidents has decreased when skiing, but Schimanofsky has increased the severity of the injuries.

The insurance companies also notice an increase in accidents: « In the past 10 years, the number of damage and benefits in private accident insurance rose by 26 percent to almost 259,200 cases in 2023. (Schev)
